A large crowd gathered at the graveside of Irish Citizen Army and Cumann na mBan Volunteer Winifred Carney in Belfast today to mark the 80th anniversary of her death.
The event, like previous Carney Commemorations, was led by a three-person colour party from the gates of Milltown Cemetery. Lasair Dhearg’s Martine Jackson, who chaired the event, spoke briefly on Winifreds life before inviting wreaths to be laid. Republican ex-Prisoners Pádraic MacCoitir and Máire Drumm laid wreaths on behalf of Lasair Dhearg and the Carney family, respectively, before main speaker Amy Rafferty addressed the assembled crowd.
