The following is rare footage of Mairéad Farrell speaking of her experiences in British jails in Ireland, including strip searches and controlled movement – tactics utilised to this day in those same jails against Republican prisoners.
Mairéad was killed on this day in 1988, just three days after her 31st birthday, which was less than one year from the recording of this footage. Mairéad and the two comrades she was with, Sean Savage and Dan McCann, were mown down in broad daylight by British Forces. The three IRA Volunteers were unarmed, and no attempts were made to arrest them.
